Ruby Elizabeth Mayes, 90, of Stanford, KY passed away on Saturday, June 1, 2019. Born on August 17, 1928 in Chatham, Virginia to the late Richard Irvin and the late Elna May Coche Craddock. Ruby was a member of Stanford Christian Church. She graduated from James Madison University and the Lexington Theological Seminary (then, College of the Bible). She started her career with the Board of Christian Publication followed by briefly working in the newspaper office in Hillsboro, Illinois followed by the Interior Journal in Stanford, KY in the late 1970's. She was a substitute teacher for the Lincoln and Gerrard County School Systems for over two decades and also worked for the 1990 Census Bureau for Lincoln and Rockcastle County. Throughout the 55 years of her marriage, Ruby assisted her late husband, Rev. Oscar L. Mayes, Jr. with his ministry in the Christian Church Disciples of Christ. Together they served congregations and communities in Mt. Zion, Providence, and Bardwell, Kentucky, before moving to Illinois and serving the churches in Hillsboro, and Irvine; in 1976 they returned to Kentucky and served churches in Stanford, Hazel Green, White Oak, and Old Grassy.
Survivors include one daughter, Cheryl N. Mayes of Stanford, KY; three brothers, Lloyd Craddock, Garnet Craddock (Mary) and Melvin Craddock (Jane); and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Oscar L. Mayes, Jr.; one daughter, Pamela Elna Mayes; three brothers, Jude Craddock, Jim Craddock and Walter Craddock.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2019 at 4 p.m. at Stanford Christian Church in Stanford, KY with Dr. Jim Baughman and Dr. Alex Wright officiating the service.
A private family internment will be held at a cemetery in Bardwell, Kentucky.
