Bennie Smith, 89, of Stanford, KY passed away Monday, February 3, 2020 at home. Born August 15, 1930 in Hustonville, KY to the late Edgar, Sr. and Lillie Fletcher Smith, he was a Korean War Veteran, and served in the United States Navy. He was a graduate of Clear Creek Baptist Bible College and later attended Campbellsville University. He retired from Rexnord, Inc. and enjoyed farming, hunting on his farm, fishing, and his bird dogs. He was a member of New Salem Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday School Superintendent for 60 plus years. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Louada Smith of Stanford, KY; two children, Michael Smith (Candi) of Bloomington Springs, TN, and Linda Smith of Stanford, KY; one brother, Lester Smith (Betty) of New Salem, KY; two sisters, Wilmoth Lee Cain (Jim) of New Salem, KY, and Peggy Coffman of McKinney, KY; six grandchildren, Sylvia Craig (David), Ben Smith, Chris Hurst (Emily), Amy Sims (Dustin), Jeremy Smith, and Adam Smith; seven great-grandchildren, Joshua Craig, Jaxson Smith, Rylee Sims, Layla Sims, Amelia Hurst, Betsy Hurst, and Bright Phothong; and a host of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, G.W. Smith, Edgar Smith, Jr., Raymond Earl Smith, Denny Smith, Hollis Smith, Ollis Smith, James Lee Smith, Loyd Smith, and Opal Smith. Visitation will be Thursday, February 6, 2020 at Spurlin Funeral Home Chapel, Stanford from 5-8pm. Funeral service will be 1pm Friday, February 7, 2020 at New Salem Baptist Church with Reverend Greg Lockard officiating. Burial will follow at New Salem Cemetery with military rites performed by American Legion Post #18. Active pallbearers will be: Jeremy Smith, Adam Smith, Ronnie Smith, Bruce Smith, Tammy Cain, Rita Smith, Rylee Sims, Tamera Johnson, and Jonathan McWhorter. Honorary pallbearers are: Deacons of New Salem Baptist Church, Kenneth Austin, Mike Bastin, Dorsey Elmore, and Ronnie Graves; and Phillip Austin, Johnny Luster, and Ben Smith. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be given to: Estes Cemetery (C/O Peggy Coffman, 8305 Green River Road, Hustonville, KY 40437).
